The city has renewed Ottawa police Chief Vern White's contract, which will now expire in June 2015.

The new contract replaces a previous agreement that was set to expire in May 2012.

The agreement, announced Friday, includes a provision for an additional two years beyond 2015, as long as both parties agree.

"The longest I've ever been anywhere is actually the four years I've been in Ottawa now," White said. "I always thought lasting five years anywhere would be difficult to do."

White mentioned talking to a university in Australia about future work once he was into the last year of his deal, but did not directly address rumours he was in consideration for commissioner of the RCMP.

White became Ottawa police chief in May 2007. During his time here, he's been instrumental in creating a youth drug treatment centre, and has been awarded a United Way Community Builder Award.

"We have a great police service that provides a tremendous level of service," he said. "It's not by accident we're one of the safest cities in the country."

In the last year, White has also had to deal with the Stacy Bonds case, in which Ottawa police officers were videotaped strip-searching the young Ottawa woman.

The incident generated lots of public backlash. White has since implemented changes to Ottawa police cellblock operations.

His new contract is set to expire June 30, 2015.
