The City of Ottawa is defending its decision to put up steel gates to block access to the Prince of Wales Bridge.

Over the weekend Councillor Jeff Leiper said the city is looking to spend up to $250,000 dollars on a gate to stop people from using the bridge . The city says all options to secure the bridge are currently under review.

An Ottawa woman wants to keep the historic Prince of Wales Bridge open to the public.

Aileen Duncan has launched a petition urging the city not to close off access to the bridge over the Ottawa river.

City manager Steve Kannelakos says since the city is the owner of the bridge it has a legal and moral responsibility to protect public safety.

Councillor Jeff Leiper has said he is opposed to the gates and the money would be better spent on other initiatives.

There is no word on when the gates will be installed.
