City crews were out on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, repainting the stop lines on Laurier Avenue in downtown Ottawa.

Motorists are now being forced to stop five metres back of cyclists in an effort to improve the safety of those riding along the Laurier bike lane.

The affected intersections run from Elgin to Bronson, anywhere a right turn is possible.  The move is supposed to make cyclists more visible to motorists wanting to turn right.  A sign at each intersection telling motorists to yield to cyclists before turning,  is now in the drivers' line of sight.

The changes arose from a working group at Ottawa City Hall, which met just days after the death of a cyclist on September 1st.

23-year old Nusrat Jahan was killed when she was struck and pinned by a truck turning right at Laurier and Lyon.

The driver of the truck has been charged.
