What do you get for a baby who’s in line to inherit a kingdom?

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson is hoping a cuddly toy moose dressed as a Mountie will do the trick.

The plush toy is Ottawa’s official gift to the latest member of British royalty, William and Kate’s new son.

“When you think of Canada you think of Mounties and moose and mountains. And this covers two-thirds. So it’s a fun way fo congratulating the royal couple,” says Watson.

The moose Mountie ( Mountie moose?) is a readily available souvenir. You can order the toy online through the RCMP’s Mountie shop. We also found it for sale in Ottawa’s Byward Market at a store appropriately called The Crazy Moose.

But it’s the thought that counts. Most people we spoke with thought the moose was a fine Canada-themed gift for a newborn. A small minority thought it was perhaps a little on the cheap side.

The gift was unveiled alongside an official Ottawa book of congratulations. Well-wishers are encouraged to sign the book at City Hall until the end of the day Friday. Or you can send your best wishes online through the Governor General’s website
