Ottawa Police say a 26-year-old man is dead after a shooting in the city's west end.

The homicide happened on Shillington Avenue around 6:00 a.m. Sunday. The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Abdi Jama.

Police say someone drove the victim to the Royal Ottawa. Staff there administered first aid and CPR until paramedics arrived and transported him to the nearby Civic Hospital. Jama was in life threatening condition when he arrived at the hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.

"We do have witnesses that we do believe were involved in transporting him to the hospital," Insp. Sean McDade says.

This incident comes after Jacob Thompson, 40, was shot and killed on Saturday morning on Elmira Drive in the west end.

The shooting on Shillington Avenue is Ottawa's 13 homicide in 2016 and 47th shooting. Police say the increase in gun violence is troubling.

"There are a lot more guns being used in crimes these days and we are concerned," McDade says.

Jama is known to police.

Police say they have no suspects in either case and are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS).
